Use of a Novel, Advanced Surgical Extracellular Matrix Promotes Tissue Regeneration, Augments Wound Healing, and Improves Patient Outcomes


Wound healing is a complex, dynamic process that can be negatively impacted by patient factors, despite appropriate medical management. As the population ages and becomes increasingly burdened by medical comorbidities known to complicate the body’s innate healing ability, the use of advanced surgical extracellular matrix (ECM) particulates that simultaneously promote tissue regeneration and prevent infection is paramount. The purpose of this article is to discuss the complex process of wound healing, as well as to identify and address areas of concern. The product XCelliStem® is a multitissue platform (MTP) graft composed of 45% biphasic collagen and 55% unique bioactive molecules from an ECM source. To the author’s knowledge, XCelliStem® is the only product that can appropriately intervene and augment the various pitfalls associated with wound healing, ultimately promoting tissue regeneration to a degree in which other products fall short. It would stand to reason that use of a surgical ECM containing a high concentration of unique bioactive proteins with a multifaceted ability to augment the healing process would reduce the healthcare burden associated with poor wound healing and improve patient outcomes overall.
